Sylvain Demers
Lignes et traces
Whether through our lifestyles, the media and social networks we consume or our family ties, we form a large visible or invisible web that unites us all. It is these different levels of interrelationship, inscribed in time and dictated by a personal need to leave a trace, that Sylvain Demers seeks to explore through the visual arts, performance, photography and writing.
Whether using generally abstract symbols, stains, lines or strings, he plays intuitively with lines, words and colors, telling stories and advocating freedom of gesture and movement, and a willingness to communicate with others.
Biographical Notes
Having toured the world, taught, acted and written dramatic and poetic works that have been performed on stage or published, at the age of 45 he discovered drawing and particularly enjoyed playing with colors. A graduate in Visual Arts and holder of a 2nd cycle diploma in artistic practices in contemporary art from the Université de Sherbrooke, he has also taken various training courses with renowned artists such as Claude Ferron, Dominique Sarrazin and Jacques Clément. This has enabled him to develop a personal technique using a variety of mediums that give free rein to his imagination. The superimposition of intersecting and intermingling mediums gives his works a multitude of interesting hues and tones. He has already taken part in group and solo exhibitions in Quebec. He has also exhibited in New York and Toronto. Among other honors, he has won the Jury Prize 3 times at various arts symposia and was awarded 3rd prize in the 3 Palms Award in 2017.
The exhibition runs from December 6, 2023 to January 31, 2024 – opening hours are Tuesday to Friday, 1 pm to 5 pm and 1 hour before each show.
