Theatre Lac Brome is continuing a tradition of professional English-language theatre which began in 1935 with the Brae Manor Playhouse, one of Canada’s first summer theatres. Sophisticated summer fare has been attracting Canadian artists and audiences to the charming town of Knowlton in the picturesque Eastern Townships of Quebec for more than 75 years. During its 21 years from 1935 to 1956 the Brae Manor produced more than 100 productions attracting performers including Christopher Plummer, Robertson Davies, Herbert Whittaker and Gaétan Gélinas to its stage. Its program focused on 20th century classics such as Pygmalion, Private Lives, You Can’t Take it with You, Charley’s Aunt and Our Town. Since 1986, Theatre Lac Brome has continued that tradition with programs that combine the classics, from Shaw and Wilde to Dario Fo, musical from Cabaret to Rock n Roll and Patsy Cline, and most especially highlighting and creating new Canadian work.
